Asbestos Removal: What Brisbane Homeowners Need to Know

Asbestos is still present in thousands of Brisbane homes. Here's how to identify it, when removal is required, what the law says, and how to stay safe during renovations.

If your Brisbane home was built before 1990, asbestos could be hiding in walls, floors, eaves, bathrooms, and even the glue holding down your old flooring. Asbestos is not dangerous when left undisturbed — but the moment you drill, cut, sand, or demolish, microscopic fibres are released into the air. Breathing them in can cause fatal lung diseases decades later.

Where Asbestos Hides in Brisbane Homes

Common locations include fibre-cement wall sheeting (often in bathrooms, laundries, and kitchens), vinyl floor tiles and sheeting, the backing of old linoleum, eaves and gable ends, fencing, and roof sheeting. In bathrooms it's frequently found behind wall tiles — which is why a routine bathroom strip-out can become an asbestos job without warning.

When Is Asbestos Removal Required?

Any renovation, demolition, or repair that will disturb bonded asbestos material requires safe removal first. Loose or friable asbestos always requires a licensed professional. In Queensland, removal of more than 10m² of bonded asbestos must be carried out by a licensed asbestos removalist. Even under that threshold, DIY removal without the right equipment and disposal method is strongly discouraged — the health risk is simply not worth it.

Safe Removal and Disposal

Our process follows Queensland guidelines: we seal the work area, use PPE and negative-pressure containment where needed, wet materials to suppress dust, double-bag and label waste, and transport it to a licensed asbestos facility. We never put asbestos in a standard skip — it must go to an approved disposal site.

Signs You May Have Asbestos

You can't identify asbestos by sight alone. If your home is pre-1990 and you're planning any demolition, arrange professional testing first. We help Brisbane homeowners test, identify, and safely remove asbestos as part of strip-out projects across the city.
